Now is the time to start thinking about how to prepare your home for a significant winter storm. Confidence is increasing for >6" of snow across most of OK with highest chance for ice near/south of the Red River. Expect hazardous travel conditions & a potential for power outages.

No major changes to our forecast with this update. The latest data is suggesting perhaps a longer period of a wintry mix in central OK, along with a slight slowing trend, but overall we are still on track for a high impact winter storm for the entire area. #okwx #txwx

Today's Hurricane Hunters winter storm mission went as planned, and all 25 sondes will be assimilated for tonight's 00Z runs of the GFS and ECMWF. Bit of caution tho, one round of sondes isn't a magic pill. Helps with initial conditions, but could take a few runs to lock in the pattern…

A significant winter storm is still on track for our area this weekend. There will be periods when there isn't much precipitation - much of the day today and tomorrow afternoon. Heavier snow/sleet/freezing rain is expected later tonight and again tomorrow night.

*Forecast Update* - Snow amounts are trending up across north-central and central OK, though greater uncertainty remains across the I-40 corridor as the amount of sleet that mixes in could raise/lower snow amounts here.

I've been forecasting for two decades and I can't recall a time when so many areas were simultaneously covered by a winter storm warning. In the United States, 53 percent of the total population is under an alert for this storm.
