The European Council has taken a proposal to force mandatory scanning of all photos and videos sent through private messengers (including encrypted messengers like Signal) and they’ve rebranded it as “upload moderation.” The implication is that it’s voluntary when it’s not.

Woke up and decided I don’t need weird parasocial interactions with strangers on the internet while on my holiday. Sorry for the disturbance.

In my opinion this change would be a big improvement to Rust. The idea that cheap copies = memcpys was naïve and wrong, realigning this to the operations that are actually cheap (rc increment, small memcpys) would be great.

You: "Rust is really bad at asynchronous stuff" Them: "How we built Pingora, the proxy that connects Cloudflare to the Internet... The Tokio async runtime turned out to be a great fit for our needs."

In your opinion, how useful is it to be able to declare something module private, as opposed to visible anywhere within the same package?

srrrse (@withoutboats) 's Twitter Profile Photo

My opinion aligns with the group: this is useful. Why? Ofc you can just change visibility if you want when you want to access the private name, limiting its utility. But the utility is in marking things that are accessed outside, so you can know when you need to look elsewhere.

I regretfully completely understand Wedson's frustrations. lore.kernel.org/lkml/202408282… A subset of C kernel developers just seem determined to make the lives of the Rust maintainers as difficult as possible. They don't see Rust as having value and would rather it just goes away.

Gotta love the EU, where a 5% party in Germany can rubbish anything that would make the continent less irrelevant, just because it thinks, portraying Southern Europeans as lazy might get them to 7% next year.
