The WIOMSA Symposium Organising Committee welcomes proposals for Special Sessions at the 13th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium, taking place from 28th September to 3rd October 2025 in Mombasa, Kenya.

Special Sessions may adopt a variety of formats—from open sessions and roundtables to interactive workshops—and should reflect inclusivity, innovation, and cross-sectoral dialogue. For more information, visit: symposium.wiomsa.org/special-sessio…

WIOMSA’s Executive Director, Dr. Arthur Tuda, is representing WIOMSA and WIOMPAN at the Indian Ocean Forum 2025. The two day gathering has brought together leaders, scientists, and policymakers committed to shaping the future of our oceans.

Co-hosted with France in Australia by the Ambassade de France en Australie, the Forum focuses on driving action for sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, ocean-based economies, and climate resilience.

This platform aims to ensure that the priorities of the Indian Ocean region are heard ahead of the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice this June.

This morning Dr. Arthur Tuda, WIOMSA Executive Director, spoke on the Scientific Panel on Strengthening Sustainable Ocean Based Economies, Sustainable Shipping and Building Coastal Resilience at the Indian Ocean Forum 2025.

Making the case for an ecosystem-based approach to regional ocean governance, Dr. Tuda shared noteworthy insights on designing frameworks and approaches that reflect the interconnectedness of the ocean.

Proposals are welcome for a range of activities, including publication launches, film screenings, evening networking receptions, art installations, and campaign unveilings. The submission deadline is 30th June 2025. 🗓️

As part of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Conservation Programme (MARCOP), the Hifadhi Blu Programme is making meaningful progress toward strengthening marine protected area (MPA) management across the WIO region.

The next phase will see grantees participate in Systems Mapping Workshops between April and May 2025. These sessions will use MARCOP’s Collaborative Systems Approach to co-develop tailored intervention plans that drive lasting change.

Through Hifadhi Blu, MARCOP is delivering on its commitment to strengthen site-level conservation, support local leadership, and contribute to achieving Global Biodiversity Target 3 across the Western Indian Ocean.
