An illustrative example of the limits of Chinese diplomacy in the Xi era: The two Chinese embassy staff will likely be applauded for showing "fighting spirit" as they try to block Cheng Lei from view. Most Australians will be appalled by their behaivour theaustralian.com.au/nation/chinese…

What China officially describes as “professional, lawful & restrained action to stop PH vessels without any direct measure against PH personnel.” I hadn’t appreciated that the incident took place at the Sierra Madre itself.

Ayungen Shoal conflict is now starting to look very much like a maritime version of the China-India border clashes - knives and sticks being employed. And for the first time we see Chinese coast guard forces right at the Sierra Madre.

Worth remembering that unlike most other countries coastguards (which are explicitly under civilian command) Chinas coastguard comes under the people’s armed police - and is therefore part of Chinas paramilitary infrastructure

Ok this is super niche, and weird, a couple old guys walking the streets of Taipei protesting that Germany still hasn’t paid reparations for Hitler stealing the Buddhist symbol of peace.

And yet, and yet, Japan is one of the (at an official level) most dog unfriendly countries in the world. So many places you cannot take man's best friend. Including the rope way to Daisetsuzan National park - even in a dog carrier.

It's truly remarkable to watch this interview from nearly 25 years ago and remember how much more open China was under the leadership of Jiang Zemin. I was living in Beijing when Mike Wallace did this interview. It was an optimistic time. youtube.com/watch?v=1tNMH2…

Gaemi is now doing weird dance off the coast of Hualien and has definitely slowed down. Who knows where or when it the eye will finally make landfall.

Excellent maiden speech by new MP Yuan Yang. Particularly poignant bit: "I fundamentally believe that our democracy is worth fighting for...I was born in China in 1990, a country without the right to vote."

🇳🇴Norway now has more EVs on the road than combustion engine vehicles. How have they done it? 1. A supportive government providing consistent and wide-ranging incentives to consumers and manufacturers. 2. Extensive charging infrastructure in public and private settings. 3.

Chinese Coast Guard call themselves a disciplined & professional force that adheres to a rule-based order. In this video of two CCG ships attacking a civilian Filipino vessel sailing inside PH's territory, there is just too much "professionalism" & "discipline" shown by CCG

It is still the rainy season in Taipei (and Kaohsiung) - which seems to last most of the year here these days. Huge rain in Taipei today, which i managed to get caught out in without an umbrella. 😂
