The problem with this statement is that USAID does a lot of work that is neither directly life saving nor on that long list of things not to do, so that missing middle of work is going to be a mess.

Conservative governments in NZ, Australia, Canada & UK demolished their countries’ stand-alone or semi-autonomous international development agencies & subsumed them within foreign ministries. The impact: subordinating development to diplomatic priorities: politico.com/news/2025/01/3…

1/ Let me explain why the total destruction of USAID - happening as we speak - matters so much. China - where Musk makes his money - wants USAID destroyed. So does Russia. Trump and Musk are doing the bidding of Beijing and Moscow. Why? apnews.com/article/trump-…

This by Secretary Marco Rubio on USAID is frankly pure bullshit and incredibly disgusting. I’ve spoken to MANY folks in USAID over the last week. And many just today. There is no rank insubordination. There is rank chaos, crying, and confusion. People who’ve spent DECADES of their life

I wrote for KNS on why foreign aid is important to Tennesseans. - “Tennesseans…can continue our inward gaze, to not live up to the example set in 1812. Or we can show that, like the original Tennessee Volunteers, we care about what happens on the other side of the mountains.”

This week, I met with some Alaskan USAID employees. They not only informed me of the confusing and callous handling of personnel matters by OPM and DOGE, but they also painted an incredibly troubling picture of what the world looks like without humanitarian assistance from the

Foreign aid is the United States' insurance policy, protecting us from bird flu, ebola, violent terrorism, illegal migration and political instability. It also evangelizes American values, sharing the good news of free markets, free speech and free people. thehill.com/opinion/intern…

USAID is gone. The man who destroyed it, Pete Marocco, is a tool of the rich and powerful. We are weaker, poorer, and less safe because of him. So I wrote a response to his column in RCP. Because his lies cannot be allowed to stand. realclearpolitics.com/articles/2025/…

The old conservative/liberal debates seem so pointless now. There's no ideology that tells you to do tariffs like this. Same thing with anti-vaxx, which is also part of MAGA. Smart/stupid is the most important political divide of our time, not right/left.

I agree with David Brooks 💯%: “At least semi-responsible for the deaths of probably by the end of this, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. That's Elon Musk’s legacy. The people who work at Tesla and SpaceX might want to think about that."

To throw in my two cents: I think this is a bit too binary. Magness thinks the median outcome is 4:02/4:03, and I agree, but there must be a small (5%? 15%? 20%?) chance that she overperforms and breaks 4, right? So my question is: what does the normal curve look like here?

America hasn’t been perfect. It’s made grave mistakes. But there is no country that has ever done more for improving the world. It breaks my heart how unappreciative Americans across the ideological spectrum are of that. Much of the left rejects we’ve ever been good for the
