Grass of Parnasus or the Bog Star is Cumbria’s county flower and is all over the hills at the moment. One of the joys of bogs alongside the equally beautifully named Devils bit Scabious which we use to call the liquorice allsorts flower as it resembles one of the sweets

4 years ago this Bracken was shoulder high with a knee deep litter layer. 4 years of cattle and fell pony grazing, and you can now easily walk through it and a grass understory has even re-established. You can see here how cattle break up and trample the Bracken.

Unbelievable...😮 One week into our Skiddaw Forest fundraiser and we're over half way towards the £1.25m goal – thanks to you! (1/3) #SkiddawForest @wildlifetrusts

Sadly not #StillFlowering, but here is a distinctive patch of Greater Cuckooflower - Cardamine raphanifolia growing by a shady beckside in the Ambleside area. Naturalised, being native to southern Europe. #WildflowerHour

Today I planted out the first of what will hopefully be many more Dyer's Greenweed plants which have been grown from cuttings taken from plants on the same site (Loweswater). #Plants #Conservation #Genista

There's still plenty of places in the lakes where you don't see another soul for hours on end. #LakeDistrict #Autumn #Exploring

So much to choose from for my #FavouriteFind for 2024, but how can it be anything other than the Whorled Caraway (Carum verticillatum) in Easdale (Grasmere)... which was a brand new county record for Westmorland! #Wildflowerhour #Botany

Despite plant surveying, my favourite find of the day was this waxcap fungi... This beauty is a 'Splendid Waxcap', with it's iconic red cap, fibrous stipe and pale edged gills. It is one of the rarer waxcaps and indicates very high quality grassland. #Waxcaps #Fungi

Was great to see so much Limestone Bedstraw (Galium sterneri) last week in the Yorkshire Dales... Its similar to Heath Bedstraw, but has distinctive backward-pointing prickles on the leaf margins. I even spotted them growing together! (Limestone left, Heath right) #Wildflowerhour
