A preferred host for ticks, Western Fence Lizards’ blood contains a protein that kills Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that is responsible for Lyme Disease. When ticks ingest the blood, many are “cured,” the protein in the lizard’s blood having neutralized the pathogen.

Are these opossums or possums? While both terms are colloquially correct, these are Virginia Opossums. Technically, possums are native to Australia & surrounding islands and opossums are native to the Americas. If you prefer to call them “possums,” we know what you mean! 😉
