Norma is a fledgling herring gull. She arrived with multiple badly broken toenails, possibly from a rough first landing off the roof where she hatched. She was bleeding quite a bit the first day, but her feet are improving with care. She’s quite stressed, so we’re working hard

We have another teeny tern in the house, this one definitely a common tern. He was likely rescued unnecessarily when parents weren’t immediately visible, then handed over to rangers. Since we don’t know exactly where the parents are, a reunion wasn’t possible. (Please make sure a

Big goose energy.💥 This fierce Canada goose came to us from a parking lot near the Gowanus Canal, where they were co-parenting a brood of 6 goslings. Not a healthy environment for waterfowl or anyone at all, but these parents were making it work for their kids. Sadly, this mom

It’s wonderful to see this red-tailed hawk standing tall — or even just standing! This juvenile was found entangled in a soccer net in the Bronx. He was very weak on arrival and was not able to perch for the first couple of days in care. Fortunately there were no severe injuries

Here’s a little extra sunshine for your #FreebirdFriday. A yellow warbler💛 This limoncello beauty collided with a window in Long Island City and spent nearly a week in the clinic recovering. We’re pleased to announce that this bird was cleared for takeoff earlier this week.

Sake cardinal is a work in progress.🥹 But look how far she’s come since she was displaced from her nest!❤️ More than most fledglings, cardinals wait until the very last minute to grow feathers on their face. They are all 👀.  📷: Lily Lugo, Suzanne Highland

That one really fun babysitter who’d let you do whatever you wanted, blue jay edition.💙 Our fledglings who must be isolated, either because they have something potentially contagious, or they’re the only one of their species we have in care, need to feel like they’re not alone.

It’s tough carrying around your great black-backed self when you only have one healthy leg. This juvenile gull, named Sharky, came to us unable to put weight on his right foot. There’s bruising along the ankle but fortunately no fractures. This guy will get cage rest on netting,

Our Brooklyn aviary is jumping! We just moved 23 graduates of our songbird nursery into this urban oasis, where they can acclimate to the sounds and sights of the wild before release. It’s stocked with their favorite foods, choice perches and roosting spots, and basically

Hanging with the big kids! One of these birds is about to head off on their first migration! We hold every Piping Plover in our hearts — especially the newest fledglings — as they head off on their perilous journeys. 🧵

Trying to poison rats outdoors is as futile as trying to hold back the tide with a broom. Any rats killed are quickly replaced by others. I just don’t see the point. Especially bc a poisoned rat may be eaten by a bird of prey, coyote or other animal with deadly and tragic effect.

He’s growing up fast, but you can tell this barn swallow is still barely more than a fledgling by that bright yellow fledgefrown. The colorful edge of the beak and inside the gape help the parents to find his mouth easily and often, both in the nest and out of it. Fledgling barn

OK, kestrels. It’s time to start wrapping it up! Good work, everyone. It’s been a great season. You made some fine fledglings. But let’s start packing it up, OK? Last call for mousicles was 10 minutes ago. Yes, we’re still receiving fledgling American kestrels, a few every week.
