The value of listening in bereavement is valuable and offers us grace to be alongside one another.

I want to tell you a true story which may help someone. Last year a teenager wrote to me. They were in their first year at a very prestigious university and felt they couldn't cope, that they were a failure and would be a disappointment. They said they felt suicidal.

but it's not easy. hearing someone talk about suicide is frightening but ignoring them does not make it go away. being able to articulate how you feel doesn't mean you won't do it, either. I am horrified by some stories from parents who say 'it's just attention seeking'

They said they'd get themselves to a safe place. Fast forward to this year when they wrote to me to say they had left uni, were really happy and thanked me for my help. Sometimes it really does just take someone to take them seriously and listen.

you bet! What's wrong with wanting attention? Please check in with your young people. Always take mention of suicide seriously and ask them if they've made plans, do they understand what suicide is? (some young people don't or are confused).

I also always say it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And don't be afraid to ask for help, there are great organisations out there that can give you support and information such as PAPYRUS, YoungMinds and of course The Samaritans.
