Film #1 of Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - Viking - A mission to Mars set inside the Big Brother house shows what happens when those people who take staff away days a little too seriously are put in charge. Absurdist Canadian 'sci-fi' examines how all we want is a sense of purpose #LIFF2022
Film #2 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - Metronom - A beautifully shot, coming of age story of youth and vitality cruelly crushed by Ceausescu’s secret police. Alexandru Belc’s debut feature is taut and tender but lacked pace & could have had a sharper ending message #LIFF2022
Film #3 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - Fast & Feel Love - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery & this story of 'boy becomes global icon, but can't make the bed' takes cues aplenty from Hollywood franchises. But it retains a heartwarming centre & delivers laughs & action & maybe a sequel
Film #4 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - Huesera - blacksheep of the family tries to overcome her history by having a baby. This triggers all sorts of regret & a slow unravelling of her state of mind. Good idea in theory, had a few moments but didn't hang together & was disappointing #LIFF2022
Film #5 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - I Have Electric Dreams - A beautiful portrayal of changing times and changing lives; showing how a teenager's outlook can be shaped by the role models around her - for good & for bad. Great poignant performances from the lead roles #LIFF2022
Film #6 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - Sick of Myself - Norwegian body shock provides a cutting rebuke of toxic relationships, the ramifications of living in a social media dominated world & the perils of being liked for gettin "likes". A stark warning to always show your true face! #LIFF2022
Film #8 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - Broker - a sideways & wistful look at what it means to be a family. Abandonment, longing & murky dealings ripple throughout as a bunch of strays forge new bonds - can bad people do good things & earn redemption? #LIFF2022
Films #9 Leeds International Film Festival - LIFF - British Short Films - Always On My Mind - Showing the perils of dial-up pizza, transcendent fox chasing, the horrors & legacy of London's endemic knife crime & the eternal grief of abandoning a child. Some punchy efforts, but lacked coherence #LIFF2022
