Site of the most significant ambush during the WOI in Wexford that resulted in the death of RIC constable Depree. Several homes were later destroyed by British forces in official reprisals. The flying column occupied the high ground visible on the right.

By August 1922 the Royal Irish Constabulary officially ceased to exist being replaced by An Garda Siochana. Pictured below are the RIC garrison at Enniscorthy town in 1920 during the War of Independence. The towns barracks was handed over in March 1922 to the local IRA.

100 years ago today a Free State soilder named Peter Hogan age 22 from Carlow was shot in an ambush at Aughnaghan bridge.The lorry he had been travelling in with others managed to cross the blown up bridge using planks when it was ambushed by anti treaty forces

In February 1921 a home and Irish boarding school belonging to Doyles of Cromouge was burned by 'masked men' following an ambush on an RIC car the previous day near Ballycarney The Echo newspaper reported 'unofficial reprisals' by British forces.

Arthurstown RIC barracks prior to being burned in August 1920. After two failed attempts to destroy it HQ gave instructions it ‘must be destroyed without any more fumbling’. Petrol was sprinkled inside the building and a straw rope known as a ‘Sugaun’ or ‘Súgan’ used as a fuse.

Kimichael Coastguard Station as it looks today. In July 1921 the coastguards present were forced to leave and the building was torched by local IRA. It remained a ruin for decades until being renovated in recent years

#OnThisDay 1923 in county Wexford Michael Furlong (20) was shot by National troops near Adamstown. A jury inquest found he died from a gunshot wound inflicted by the military in the discharge of their duty owing to the deceased failing to halt when called upon.
