The extreme temperatures are only worth it if we get to do fun science experiments. I’m disappointed to report that bubbles blown and hot water sprayed outside at -15 degF did not freeze. I can confirm that standing barefoot in an open doorway for a few minutes was not good.

Congrats to my Ph.D. student, @AlexKrichels, for publishing his study showing that greenhouse gas emissions in historically poorly-drained soils in depressions respond differently than upslope soils to intense rain events. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

In the last few days I’ve reviewed 8 abstracts from my group for #ESA2019. Sitting down now to write my own abstract. I can’t wait to share with y’all what we’ve been up to for the last couple years. Louisville, watch out for the Yangers!

Friends who study dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, one of my undergrads redesigned PCR primers to optimize detection of phylogenetically diverse nrfA genes. This supersedes the Welsh primers for nrfA. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Another paper from an undergrad-led project is finally out! We found that the direction of invasive perennial pepperweed effects on soil nitrogen cycling depends on phenology. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ec…

Congrats, Dr. @AlexKrichels! I’m so proud of your work on historical versus contemporary controls on soil greenhouse gas emissions. And what an awesome dissertation cake to celebrate your defense! Best wishes for your postdoc with @PeteHomyak!

Microbial diversity can matter in controlling soil nitrous oxide emissions! I co-wrote a report to translate all of the microbiology-speak for ecosystem ecologists: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

From our CABBI team! Energy sorghum defies the dichotomy between annual and perennial grasses with its water and energy fluxes similar to miscanthus and nitrogen fluxes similar to maize: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/gc…
