Last night’s screening at TMU of #BetteroffDead & its panel afterwards was a powerful event centered critiquing state-assisted death in the UK as well as Canada, with our Track 2 #MAiD. Shoutout to panelists Liz "blue tick" Carr @AhonaMedhi of Disability Justice Network of Ontario & Rob Lattanzio, @ARCHDisability

There is no independent living if there is nowhere to actually live in community. This is a big win for community after a huge amount of work by AHWG members and city staff! Very pleased to have worked alongside dedicated and passionate working group members. #accessiblehousing

The terms “special” and “special needs,” when used to describe disabled people, devalue and segregate disabled people. They are an expression of ableism and assign a burden to disabled people. Disabled people do not have special needs. Disabled people have human needs.

🚨 The employment gap is real. In 2023, only 47% of persons with disabilities were employed compared to 67% of those without disabilities – a gap of nearly 20%! 💼 This #NDEAM, we're raising awareness about these disparities & reaffirming our commitment to closing this gap.

Many disabled folks write brilliantly on here on a range of disability matters. You know there’re many vital issues impacting our community so do consider submitting a piece, some of y’all.

If you’ve written something about community this year think about submitting it for consideration for our Helen Henderson Award.

It’s the UN International Day for Persons with Disabilities. The theme is ‘leadership of disabled people for an accessible future’ - amazing goal but very difficult in a world not built for, or welcoming of, us. Here is my statement on the day: cilt.ca/cilt-statement… #IDPD2024
