Dr. Marie Clay referred to a child’s progress as change over time. These photos are an excellent example of change over time in the development of literacy and the power of contingent, responsive teaching in Reading Recovery lessons. #readingrecoveryworks #buildingbetterreaders

The Broken Logic of "Sold a Story" "In a masterpiece of branding, Hanford and others call their approach "The Science of Reading," not so subtly implying that it is an unquestioned consensus among researchers, beyond dispute. That is not the case." ow.ly/5kC850RG0lR

Destiney Concannon @rrcna_org I wish every school had this program for students too!! There are so many who do not understand what Reading Recovery does for our students. These successes MUST be shared and celebrated!

This book covers a lot of the thoughts I had about Sold a Story. This exposes the cracks in her argument. Every child is different and has different needs. Phonics is not always the answer for why a child isn't reading.

"Experts have released robust research to show that phonics should be taught hand-in-hand with reading and writing to encourage true literacy and a love of reading, not through narrow synthetic phonics." phys.org/news/2024-05-r…

"The ugliest of ironies is that reading reform driven by the 'science of reading' (SOR) story fails the evidence test, notably that SOR legislation is not based on science." radicalscholarship.com/2024/05/25/ign…

A Conversation on the Science of Reading by Thomas Ultican "The Orwellian labeled science of reading (SoR) is not based on sound science. It more accurately should be called “How to Use Anecdotes to Sell Reading Products.” tultican.com/2024/05/27/a-c…

Interesting to reflect on how mandating particular programmes or initiatives, can discourage confidence, engagement and implementation from experienced, knowledgeable leaders and teachers. Such a misuse of power and politics.

If you want to understand what's happening in reading & predict the near future, all you need is good memory or this 20yo book Reading for Profit (Altwerger, 2005): A sampling of the TOC: "The rich get richer and the poor get direct instruction" (only)

The SOR Policy Tax: 1. more workbooks, fewer real books 2. more skill practice, less writing 3. more low-level "trainings" less development 4. more $ on materials, less on anything else
