The cosmos has evolved a creature whose being consists of freedom. That is, a person is a temporalized creature who lives perpetually from a remembered past into an imagined future.

We live towards a future that we choose for ourselves. This is our freedom. As many in the existentialist movement understood, our existence (as free beings) precedes our essence (as human beings). We are responsible for creating the meaning of human existence.

Our essence is yet to be created. It lies in the future, within our “utopian horizons”. We are precisely “freedom” because we have no predetermined essence.

Today we know that the Cosmos has evolved our freedom as part of its vast evolutionary impulse, drawing complexity and consciousness out of apparent causal determinism and necessity.

Lower forms of consciousness exist in plants and animals. Higher forms of consciousness culminate in freedom. We can decide what to do today, tomorrow or next year.

This situation is in direct conflict with all the great wisdom traditions of humanity.

The philosopher Hans Jonas captures something of the cosmic drama that derives from the evolution of human freedom from the basis of being. Our freedom, he says, is equivalent to our capacity for “transcendence,” and it is cosmic transcendence that gave us this gift.

Man is more than a craftsman who builds himself as he models nature: he is his own artist, and this precisely when he acts freely, when he forges his own destiny.

Human creativity consists in producing the future, not on the basis of mere preconditions, but with a spontaneity that neither follows a path laid out beforehand nor simply discovers a hidden but already existing path.

Instead of establishing a world based on the vision of a redeemed and uplifted future, we continue to think in terms of causality and failed systems such as militarized nation-states in conjunction with the economics of greed and domination.
