In 1914, the SC Baptist Convention purchased Dr. Augustus B Knowlton's practice in Columbia, SC, and renamed it the Baptist Hospital. Curious about the hospital's legacy? Today, it continues to serve the community as a part of the Prisma Health network #ABCsOfSCHospitals

The Charleston County Health Department was established in May 1920. The department ran programs including maternal and child health programs and midwifery training. This picture is one of the few photographs that documents the midwives!

In 1937, with funds from the Public Works Administration, Dorchester County Hospital was established to replace two inadequate hospitals in the town, and it served patients through the 80s. #ABCsOfSCHospitals

Check out this anatomical illustration from "Anatomical Tables with Explanations and an Abridgement of the Practice of Midwifery" by William Smellie, MD (1787). Smellie then decided to publish this book with enhanced illustrations to supplement his previous publications.
