On the Moon, in Mare Serenitatis (the eastern eye of the Man in the Moon), there is the crater named for Sir Frederick Banting. The crater is 6.4 km wide. The landing sites of Apollo 15 and 17 are located a few hundred kilometres away on either side.

On this day in 1904, William Hall died in Avonport, Nova Scotia. During the Siege of Lucknow in 1857, he distinguished himself as a member of the Royal Navy and earned the Victoria Cross for his bravery. He was the first Black person and first Nova Scotian to receive the medal.
