1/3 As this is the official #VJDay 80 let's not forget the so-called 'Forgotten Fleet' & its part. Here's a photo of sailors of the British Pacific Fleet - led by & mainly Royal Navy - on the flight-deck of one carrier studying a vista containing two others.

At just 22, John Booth was taken as a PoW in Singapore. He survived double leg amputation without anaesthetic, returned home, raised a family, and walked on prosthetics for 70 years. A proud Blesma Member from 1946 until his passing in 2016. #VJDay80 #NeverForgotten

10 years ago, we visited Thailand and travelled to the Bridge over the River Kwai and to Hellfire Pass where the Australians had to chisel through rock in awful conditions. I wondered then, as I wonder today, how any of those lads survived and returned home. #ww2 #VJ80 #vjday2025

We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Jones, a WWII veteran, who died peacefully aged 103. Tom served in the Far East in 1942, in extremely tough conditions, before returning home to work as a bus and tanker driver. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.

Day 2 - yesterday - I visited this cemetery in northern France. It has a strong and sad royal connection. Anyone care to guess where I was and whose grave I visited? #ww1

In 1943, two German POWs at Latimer House boasted about outsmarting British interrogators, unaware their cell was bugged by MI6. This is the story of how these German POWs spilled Nazi rocket secrets: (a short thread🧵)

Acting Bombardier Herbert Mallabone, Royal Field Artillery, died of wounds on this day in 1917. The 27-year-old who served with the 15th Division’s ammunition column came from my hometown, Nuneaton. 📍Brandhoek New Military Cemetery 🇧🇪

Please remember the astonishing contributions of the "secret listeners" at Latimer House, Trent Park, and Wilton Park, whose vital WW2 intelligence work shortened the war and saved countless lives.

Operation Valkyrie was the 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler with a bomb concealed in a briefcase. In the clandestine corners of Lisbon’s nocturnal streets, Agent Rita Winsor and defector Otto John covertly strategised the daring attack. The mission, however, did not

Britain has just lost its last Victoria Cross recipient of WW II. Airman John Cruickshank, who sank a German U-boat in 1944, has died aged 105 - one day after the 80th anniversary of the end of the conflict. Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for your service. 🇬🇧
