Was going through some old photos from my first book, The Propeller Under the Bed. Here's some iconic/trend-setting homebuilt aircraft & their designers: Baby Ace (Paul Poberezny), BD-5 (Jim Bede), VariViggen (Burt Rutan) & RV-4 (Richard VanGrunsven).

30 years ago, on February 10, 1st Lt Jeannie Flynn (later Leavitt) became the first USAF woman to qualify as a combat pilot. Flynn's opportunity to train in the F-15E came after DoD ordered the services to train women in combat aircraft in Apr 93. She retired in 2023 as a 2-star.

On Feb 2, 1970, during a training mission, an F-106 went into a flat spin. After the pilot ejected, the aircraft recovered on its own. It then made a belly landing in a field in Montana. The aircraft, dubbed 'the Cornfield Bomber,' flew again and is now on display at the NMUSAF.

On April 24, 1980, an RH-53D helicopter collided with an EC-130E while withdrawing from an aborted attempt to rescue 53 Iranian hostages, killing 8 servicemen. The failed mission led to a complete overhaul of the way US SOF are organized, trained, and equipped.

On May 22, 1991 the House passed the 1992 defense budget bill, including a provision to repeal the 1948 law that excluded women from combat aircraft. After much resistance in the Senate, President Bush signed the bill on Dec 5; DoD did not change its policy until Apr 28, 1993.
