The term "null and void" refers to something that is legally ineffective or invalid. When applied to contracts or marriages, it means that the document has no force or effect and is as if it never existed. (Thread👇)

A marriage can be deemed null & void , if the marriage is Incestuous,if one of the parties is still in a legal valid with someone else,if someone is not of legal age,if consent it was obtained through fraud, duress, coercion, or force etc(Thread👇) .

In the context of marriages and legal contracts, the terms "null and void," "voidable," and "annulment" have specific meanings and implications and must never be confused. (Thread 👇)

NOTE: Null and void marriages are “non existent” from the start. But voidable marriages are considered legally valid until annulled by a court. The aggrieved party must take legal action to have the marriage annulled, and until then, the marriage is considered valid (Thread👇)

Annulment is the legal process through which a marriage is declared null & void or voidable. An annulment states that the marriage was invalid from the start (in cases of null &void marriages) or became invalid due to specific conditions (in cases of voidable marriages).(Thread)

Lastly, always remember that there are only five(5) types of marriage that are recognized in Uganda - Civil marriages, Islamic marriages, Church marriages, Hindu marriages, and Customary marriages. Each one of them has its requirements under the law.

Mercy K. Kainobwisho I think that it is also important for the public to know what someone authorised to preside over a church marriage(eg a Pastor) is required to have in order to ensure that the marriage is valid. There are 'Pastors' who preside over 'church' marriages without authorisation.
