Shohei Ohtani is distinct as a player in many ways. One of those is that he's almost never slid head first in his MLB career. Who else is similar/who's most different in sliding approach? We have the data! sportsinfosolutions.com/2024/09/24/sta…

The chart says it all, but in words… Offensive success fluctuates, but red zone and open field typically mirror each other. Not true the last two years. Red zone success has kept dropping off while open field success has flattened out after declining from 2020 to ‘22.

Took a random thought from a team group chat and ran with it. I think that consistency in process has value that we might have trouble capturing in the statistical record. But on-field consistency doesn't seem to be reliable or predictive of success.

Saw tweets about the Heisman, felt cute. Per Total Points: Travis Hunter - 37 TP Top 20 WR, top 10 CB. Insane. Ashton Jeanty - 52 TP 2nd-best 6-week start by a non-QB since 2018. This is Ohtani/Judge in 2022; dominant on one side > excellent on both. For now.

Offensive line groups are a lot less stable than you probably think. Very few groups even play a season's worth of snaps together. So, there isn't a ton of opportunity for continuity, but even short of that volume I don't see a meaningful impact of a group playing together more.

Russell Wilson moonball, so hot right now. And his numbers match the narrative. His "launched" throws in 2024: 16% of attempts (most) 50% success rate (2nd-best to Purdy) Among passers with 1000 attempts since 2018, same split: 11% of attempts (most) 38% success (6th-best)

Earlier this year we wrote an article about how Total Points loved Derek Carr, and then he was surprisingly good. Now I'm writing an article about how Total Points loves Bo Nix. And I'm really hoping he turns out surprisingly good.

Huge advantage for Tampa Bay in the run game. Bucs had the best success rate in the NFL on gap-scheme runs, and they were 8th in the NFL in usage so it's no small sample. Washington defense was 4th-worst in success rate against the power run game, saw it more than anyone.

Started with research for this week's games, ended up with this: Most tendency / scheme mismatches that you see—Team A is great at X, Team B is bad defending X—aren't often predictive of the upcoming game. They're better used as a starting point for deep dives and film study.
