While we are about to breach the 7th planetary boundary, and ocean acidification is close to a tipping point where further CO2 absorption by the ocean will become more difficult, the International Maritime Organization is kicking desperately needed decisive action once again in the long grass...

The Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, whose members control some $15 trillion dollars’ worth of funds, issued a report this month calling for investors to work to improve the performance of land-based mining while casting aspersions on #deepseamining and “the potential

Pretty incredible that EU fisheries ministers keep doing everything they can to destroy the fisheries sector and the marine ecosystems in the Baltic! Who exactly are they representing?

🧵🌊 Great news for #OurOcean! The #Azores Marine Protected Areas Network (RAMPA) has been approved! 🎉This ambitious initiative aims to protect 30% of the Azorean Sea, expanding legal protections from just 5% to around 300,000 km². 🐠✨

🛟Commissioner-delegate Apostolos Tzitzikostas lists maritime safety as one of his top priorities, as well as investing in "sustainable fuels" Let's not forget that many of these fuels carry safety and environmental risks. The solution? wind tech and wind propulsion first! 🛳️🌬️

#DeepSeaMining will not only destroy vast areas of incredible deep-sea life, but also impact #BlueEconomy sectors like fisheries. Good to see that the fisheries advisory councils join the ever louder call for a moratorium! 👏

#EUOceanPact will not include legislation, it will just be a framework for coordination of ocean-related policies, says Costas Kadis. This is not a good message to send to #UNOC3 in Nice. We need action, not just more documents to end up in MEP drawers, as said by Emma Wiesner...

Commissioner-designate Costas Kadis has thus far evaded answering questions related to the issue of #bottomtrawling in protected areas. How will this reflect on his statements regarding implementation of existing EU law & policy? #HabitatsDirective #EUBiodiversityStrategy #UNOC3

Fishing. Extraction. Productivity. It seems that Costas Kadis is forgetting half of his portfolio. So far in his hearing, the Commissioner-designate for fisheries and OCEANS seems to ignore that protection of marine ecosystems is key to tackle the triple crisis we face.

Monica Verbeek (@verbeeksar) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Indeed, I am happy to hear that #Kadis wants to base policy on science - which is clear about the detrimental impact of fishing on marine #biodiversity.

Monica Verbeek (@verbeeksar) 's Twitter Profile Photo

At the #EPHearing #Kadis answers Thomas Bajada, stressing the need to implement marine legislation. Indeed, if we could just finally get proper implementation of the #CFP, the #MSFD, and the Marine Action Plan the #EUseas would be a lot better off !! #BlueManifesto #OceanPact

Given that #BottomTrawling does have especially high rates of bycatch and discards, it seems odd that Costas Kadis does not want to address this destructive fishing method in his answers...

🌊 Congratulations to Costas Kadis, the new EU Commissioner for Fisheries & Oceans! 🎉We look forward to working together to protect the ocean from destructive fishing practices & ensure thriving marine ecosystems for future generations! #MarineProtectedAreas #RethinkFisheries🌍

EU LIFE funding helps environmental NGOs to bridge the gap between EU policy makers and citizens, critical for democracy, driving solutions for the climate, biodiversity & pollution crises. NGOs get EUR 15.6 M/year; 0.006% of the EU budget. - a bang for your bucks!
