The War of the Beast series of Warhammer 40k introduced some of the stupidest events and character abilities, that were never mentioned before or afterwards. Nobody declares it non-canon to the 40k universe, despite it creating a lot of inconsistencies. The events still happened.

Even if SOTM retcons details about "The Mimic" lore, Tales is still most likely part of the game continuity. Since there are several other stories still clearly meant to overlap with the games, and SWS implies the SWS games and TFTP are different parts of a whole story.
