John St. Clair Knock knock knocking... Second review, as my first got swallowed by the algorithm. John St. Clair is on my twitter feed and as he mentioned Stalin's Door, I said I'd give it a whirl. I liked the sample enough to buy it at once.
John St. Clair The story follows three main characters through the horror that was Stalinism and the Gulag: Zhenya, a young daughter of a high up official, Sava, a secret watcher of the family, and his wife, Lera.
John St. Clair After Zhenya's parents are denounced and arrested, Sava brings her back to his wife in order to save her from being put in an orphanage. They themselves are also denounced (that could do with more detail) and Lera and Zhenya end up spending 15 years in a Gulag.
John St. Clair It's a very bleak story (I had to read a John Scalzi novel right afterwards to pep me up), but of course, that's how the times were. John is a good author and pulls you into the story.
John St. Clair The part I would have preferred done differently was the ending (as other reviewers have already mentioned). Otherwise, a gripping read! Please something more upbeat in your next work? 😉 4 STARS
