Excited to be part of a kick-off meeting for a Powell Center working group. This group will be developing models of mosquito #phenology - and hopefully, @USANPN will ultimately deliver forecasts using these models. What a great team this is! usgs.gov/centers/powell…

Panarchy addresses complex socio-ecological problems and can be a useful model for ecosystem management during accelerating rates of change. Great new Powell Center Powell Center paper by Garmestani and others in Frontiers: ow.ly/hWKQ50C2Uoi

This Friday, Nov. 20 is our next Soup & Science Seminar feat. NREL’s very own EcoJillBaron! Dr. Baron will be giving a seminar titled: "Addressing the global nitrogen challenge" about N accumulation in the environment. Please email nrel(dot)seminar(at)gmail(dot)com for the link!

Ongoing work by USGS via Powell Center helped to support the adoption of a new international standard for ecosystem accounting. The SEEA EA ow.ly/8FOI50DXIIC. was accepted by the U.N. Statistical Commission as a statistical standard on March 11, 2021. #makenaturecount

So much effort in US has gone to identify water supplies, but as they dwindle we need much better accounting related to water demand. New Powell Center Powell Center paper by Marston et al. 2022 lays out challenges and opportunities. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…

Not all coral reefs are declining, giving hope for persistence. Elahi et al. (doi:10.1002/eap.2651) demonstrate coral reef oases most likely in areas of low human population density. Results are directly applicable to biodiversity conservation strategies. Proudly Powell Center

Coral reef oases DO exist, and Powell Center group from 2016 determined the characteristics that allow some reefs to thrive. Check it out at usgs.gov/centers/spcmsc…. Synthesis, the gift that keeps on giving. Powell Center
