Parasites need mitochondrial respiration to cause disease. Indeed, common anti-malaria drugs target respiratory enzymes (e.g. atovaquone). But how do the parasite enzymes work and how do drugs inhibit them? Read Andrew Maclean and Alex Mühleip phenomenal work to find out! 👇

Andrew Maclean Respiratory complexes form “super-complexes” whose physiological function is debated, and assembly only studied in a few organisms. We showed that apicomplexan conserved proteins mediate III2-IV supercomplex formation, and that this provides competitive growth advantage.
