As someone who likes when words have meanings, this "everything can be D&D and there's no wrong way to play" thing kind of annoys me. It's ok if the game you run isn't D&D. Other systems aren't D&D. You can run your own experimental game too and it doesn't need to be D&D.

If you can't start with a baseline of playing and discussing the Rules As Written, no meaningful dialogue can be had, just a bunch of people shouting useless anecdotes at each other because nobody is playing the same game.

I for one support the thin dragon line and those that police other's games. If you are playing by the rules, you have nothing to worry about, citizen. We are a nation of laws!
