Look what top lad 🇬🇧Mark R. Jones🇬🇧 sent me. The first three games I wrote for the Spectrum! Takes me back to sitting on the edge of the bed squinting at code on the TV. Good times 😀

This map for Everyone's a Wally is 40 years old. It was originally published in CRASH but reused in ZZAP! when the game was released on C64. What's interesting is it is one of the very first maps compiled using screenshots vs. being a hand-drawn. Very innovative for the time!

40 years ago the late Archer Maclean brought this into the ZZAP! office. We were amazed. And not surprising, really, as it was and still is the greatest shooter ever released on C64. It's smooth, supremely playable, and beautifully tuned. Hasn't dated a day. Total all-time great.

40 years ago, US Gold signed a Disney deal that ultimately didn't go anywhere. The QL got a game, but also didn't go anywhere. Meanwhile, Commodore posted a record net loss - 'cos they spent tons of cash on new machines nobody wanted. If only they'd just focused on C64/Amiga...

40 years ago, Sega was one of the arcade kings that produced many classic coin-ops. US Gold snapped up the licensing rights/UK distribution rights to numerous US-produced ports, giving them this terrific selection of conversions. Some were better than others, but many were great!

40 years ago, Sinclair announced a 128k Spectrum, which TBH, was totally redundant for your average consumer. And speaking of redundant, Atari canceled its 130 ST, which was utterly hopeless. It didn't even have enough memory to run its OS properly. The 520 ST was perfectly fine.

35 years ago, many companies were rereleasing their old games as budget titles (and in doing so, destroying the full-price game market - DOH!). This was Ocean's effort. Some decent bargains to be had here, though not quite "rock bottom prices." Those would be yer £1.99 specials!

40 years ago, Firebird was heavily marketing Elite and basically making the game a huge success off the back of stellar reviews. In contrast, this was Acorn's highly unconvincing wall-of-text marketing effort six months earlier, which was nowhere near as effective.

40 years ago, Software Projects was advertising Jet Set Willy II. On CPC it was great. JSW wasn't released on that, and this was essentially the original plus some new screens. Not so great on Speccy, tho. Good, but far too much like the original so felt like a bit of a ripoff.

35 years ago, I was busy writing this news page for the third edition of Complete Guide to Consoles, which included an upcoming console whose name caused a snigger or two among us juvenile reprobates.

40 years ago last month, ZZAP! featured this shocker of a cover. It certainly got peoples' attention and indeed a couple newsagents thought it so horrific, they put it on their top shelf. Oh, the humanity. Think of the poor wee kids! Sold absolutely gangbusters, of course!
