Did you know in 2000 The University of Florida Digital Collections (UFDC) were established. With the dawn of the new century, the Digital Library was inaugurated in 2000, as was the PALMM (Publication of Archival, Library and Museum Materials) project.

Many people do not realize how large Lib West and Smathers are, so we added a banana for scale.

Did you know in 2001 RefeXpress, a chat service for reference questions, was launched and the first e-books were acquired. In Spring 2000 a pilot project for providing online reference service was launched and in February 2001 RefeXpress was introduced through WebLUIS.

Did you know in 2012 The FLorida Academic REpository (FLARE) was organized to provide storage for low use print materials from academic libraries in Florida? To alleviate our materials space problems, a newly acquired building by the airport has been turned into storage space.

Did you know in 2014 the Judaica Suite opened? The suite was designed by world-renowned architect and artist Kenneth Treister.

Did you know in 2017 The Albert H. Nahmad Panama Canal Gallery opened? In 2012 the Panama Canal Museum in Seminole, Florida closed and transferred its collection to the Smathers Libraries to become the Panama Canal Museum Collection.

During intersession, the HSCL will be closed the weekend of 8/9-8/10, closing at 7pm the week of 8/11-8/15, closed the weekend of 8/16-8/17, and closing at 6pm from 8/18-8/20. We hope everyone's break is out of this world! UF Libraries

Did you know in 2019 UF began participation in a mass digitization project through Google Books. By project completion, Google Books will have digitized hundreds of thousands of materials from the Smathers Libraries. As of 2025, more than 88,000 items have been digitized.
