@typhoidland's "Typhoid, Cockles & Terrorism: How a Disease Shaped Dublin" opened Sunday! Join me on a curator tour of one of our 3 exhibitions: "Contours of a Taboo" an exploration in seven scenes of the history of #bioweapons & the '1920 Sinn Féin #Typhoid Plot' (1/10)

Claas Kirchhelle (@kirchhelle) 's Twitter Profile Photo

But are all #microbiologists wielding these awesome powers trustworthy? Scene 2 takes you to legendary #scifi author H.G. Wells' study & explores dark early fantasies of #bioterrorism & #biowarfare. Is all #bioviolence taboo? Or are some uses OK? Be prepared to be troubled. 4/10

Claas Kirchhelle (@kirchhelle) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The 1st country to probe the contours of the #biovioence taboo was Imperial Germany: #WWI German agents used #biosabotage to disrupt Allied animal & agricultural supply chains with glanders, anthrax, etc. Scene 3 takes you to agent Anton Dilger's secret lab in Washington DC 5/10

Claas Kirchhelle (@kirchhelle) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The reputational fallout for Germany was huge- but #biosabotage had proven viable. Between 1918-1921, IRA planners considered bioweapons use against British forces ca. 4 times. Scene 4 explores the plans & joins IRA Dir. of Chemicals O'Donovan in UCD's Earlsfort Terrace Labs 6/10

Claas Kirchhelle (@kirchhelle) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The 1925 Protocol was patchy. Scene 7 ends the exhibit by exploring how #ColdWar super powers tried to close gaps with the 1972 #BiologicalWeaponsConvention - & why international adherence continues to rely on the moral taboo on #bioviolence that emerged between 1900 & 1920. 9/9
