Margaret Pearse requested the return of her sons' bodies (executed 3 & 4 May 1916) for burial. Gen Maxwell: These graves will be turned by Irish sentimentality into the shrines of martyrs & there will be a constant irritant in the country caused by annual procession etc. to them.

Francis Sheehy Skeffington was killed 1916, following his earlier arrest but without a trial. General Maxwell to Lord Kitchener, below, attributes Sheehy-Skeffington's execution, and other less serious incidents, to the inexperience and ‘jumpiness’ of the British troops.

Liam S. Gogán's thoughts on writing poetry: I wrote ... in Irish because I detested English. Beginning about 1914 I have no doubt that my first verses owe their birth to the fertilising spirit [of] Irish freedom that possessed us all at that time.

The Easter Rising began 1916. We hold fragments of an original proclamation which were ‘pasted on the wall of the G.P.O. Dublin. April 24th 1916.'

Mick O'Farrell digitally restored our fragments to their original place, and wrote about them here:

I wonder if the 'absolutely reliable source' mentioned in this 'Secret' document was 'Granite' or 'Chalk' ?
In 1916, as the rebels prepared for rebellion, 2 spies were observing them, codenamed Granite & Chalk.
They've never been identified.
