"You wanted quicker burger-flipping; instead, you got beauty too cheap to meter... If art - and music, and poetry, and all the rest - were just jobs programs - tell me now, so I don’t hesitate when the time comes to paperclip you." astralcodexten.substack.com/p/turing-test

It might not happen tomorrow, but eventually we will figure out how to create a 500 foot bird, and when it arrives we need to make sure it is friendly to us.

The doge still being there the next morning, after taking a withering beating from all of Twitter, is surely some Star Spangled Banner level business.

There are 12 polyominoes with cells marked with positive integers that sum to 4. Here they overlap in a 3×4 grid so each cell of the grid has numbers that also sum to 4. (Hat tip to Bryce Herdt, who found the first solution to this. I found another that allows a "nice" drawing.)

For (a bit of) context, these are all the possible ways (up to rotation and reflection) to cut three adjacent faces of a cube vertically, horizontally or diagonally. To me, some of them also look like Mandalorian helmets.

Very clever periodic tiling of the aperiodic monotile! (Not a contradiction: it's only tiling a strip, (If you "unroll" it) not the whole plane.)

Stuff like this makes me just a little bit glad that I am a total loser whom nobody would want a relationship with, because I would totally be that guy if I were in a position to have standards. (I've been keeping this sort of comment off Twitter, but whatever, Twitter is dying.)

Since more of my followers are likely to be interested in mathematical puzzles for their own enjoyment rather than for pedagogical purposes, I perused the free PDF, and this is the good stuff.

Can you solve this #binarypuzzle where every cell must have a 0 or 1. The same number cannot appear three times in a row, and 0s and 1s must appear the same number of times on rows and columns, and no repeat rows or columns. #math #puzzle #adhd #blacktwitter #adhdtwitter

Another day, another record for the North Atlantic. Everything is happening so fast, it's hard to get a sense of the enormity of these anomalies, let alone their consequences.

Even in the Poison Garden, this little guy is in isolation. Why? Because it is one of the most venomous and dangerous plants in the world - if you touch it, the sensation is likened to being burned and electrocuted at the same time, and the effects can persist for YEARS. a 🧵

A fun thing about being the me that I am at the age that I am is thinking that many public health recommendations for me would be different if we used base 12. (Specifically thinking about shingles vaccine.)
