Both Stalking and Human Trafficking Awareness Months are recognized in January. Both of these issues are very real in our communities. Follow along this month as we shed some light on these two forms of violence.

Human trafficking has been a widely discussed issue in the media in recent years. We must use media literacy skills when we come across information about human trafficking because there is a lot of false information spread on this topic.

According to Michigan law (MCL 750.411h): "Stalking" means a willful course of conduct involving repeated or continuing harassment of another individual.

In the majority of human trafficking cases, the victim/survivor knows, trusts, and may even love the person trafficking them. This is rarely shown in the media, which tends to make people believe that human trafficking usually begins with a stranger abduction.

Labor trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to make someone provide labor or services. Turning Point provides support and services for people of any gender, age, or background who have experienced labor trafficking.

While stalking looks different in every situation, it can be helpful to have an understanding of what tactics may be used. If someone tells you that they are being stalked, believe them and consider sharing Turning Point's 24-Hout Hotline number.

If you are being stalked, one option that you might consider is filing a Personal Protection Order (PPO). Turning Point has advocates that are available to assist survivors of stalking with the necessary forms and e-filing, as well as providing resources and discuss safety.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. In a single year, over 1.5 million teens experience physical violence at the hands of their dating partner. We encourage you to commit to learning more and raising awareness of teen dating violence this month and beyond.

Our 24-Hour Hotline is a great resource for young people who are looking for a confidential, accessible, and supportive resource to seek help or talk about their experiences.

Trauma, including teen dating violence, can be a significant factor in unhealthy or harmful behavior. It is critical that young people who have experienced violence receive support and compassion.
