Back in July, I crossed my fingers and sent a letter to one of the Umpires at the MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta, asking for a baseball. Imagine my surprise when I checked the mail today and found an autographed game ball, a patch, and a handwritten letter. Unbelievable.

Today I am writing letters to those injured in the church shooting this past Sunday. Most were injured while trying to help others get out. Mr. Rogers always taught us to look for the helpers and it is my privilege to be able to honor their strength and sacrifice with a MAIL HUG.

I’m super excited to announce that my American Flag will be leaving next week to fly at its 24th location, joining Purdue University on their expedition to the remote island of Nikumaroro, in the Pacific Ocean, in search of the lost Lockheed Electra airplane of Amelia Earhart.

Many of my letters are meant to be a comfort to those I write to. Sometimes their replies can bring your entire day to a stop, just to process the emotions. Today was one of those moments, with a letter from Mr. Joe Lychner, who lost his wife and children on TWA 800 in 1996.

Every August, I write to Mr. Jack Grandcolas. His wife and unborn baby were on Flight 93 on 9/11. Every October, I receive a handwritten card in response. It’s a very special penpal tradition that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

HAPPY VETERANS DAY Each Veterans Day marks the start of my annual SALUTE TO VETERANS Christmas card drive, to benefit the Kinston VA Home. With more than 11,000 cards collected over the last five years, I’m excited to see how much support our Veterans can get this year.

Through many generous donations, my sister and I were able to drop off over 100,000 sports cards to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern NC Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern NC Hopefully they will brighten many faces this holiday season.
