in early medieval times, the written word was seen as magical. Very few were literate, and those few who could read were mostly holy men imagine the power of *writing down* laws would have had at the time, imbuing them with magic the past is a foreign country

Basil๐Ÿงก associate professor aren't professors, at least not in England. There they're called "Senior Lecturer". Professor is reserved for only the highest rank, called "Full Professor" in the US The whole "assistant" and "associate" professor thing has always felt like stolen valor imo

you can really tell that Tolkien was a professor of medieval literature. He knew exactly how to make stories that sound like myth, obscure references that lead nowhere (as if the answer was in a manuscript lost to us)
