Just returned from a battlefield tour in Gallipoli expertly guided by Tim Thurlow. The wild flowers of the Gallipoli peninsula belie the fierce fighting which took place here in WW1.

Seven years since I collected this bespoke and commissioned painting. From a photo I took. John Cleaveland is the artist. Wonderful and pride of place in my dining room. Welsh Dragon at Mametz Wood, Somme.

Three men I remember (amongst many) last week. Pink Farm Cemetery, Lancashire Landing Cemetery and Pte. Turner, 1st Border Regiment, Cape Helles Memorial. Turner was K.I.A. 25/4/1915, the day of the landing. I am but the custodian of the medals.

New life as seen at the site of Troy last week. After the 1915 battlefield we had an excursion to see the ancient city. These guys kept me entertained.

On this day in 1915 Major Hugh Quinn was killed. Quinn’s Post one of the deadliest locations on Anzac was named after him. His grave then & now. The background hill is identical. And how the cemeteries change from May to September under the scorching Aegean sun. Shrapnel Valley.

One man’s life is represented in this 1915 star. Well his military life perhaps. He landed on X Beach on 25/4/1915. Twelve hours later he was dead and his war was over. I took this medal back to X beach last week as a mark of respect. To say his name is to make him live again

I’ve been back a week from the Dardanelles and Gallipoli but a little piece of me remains there. I still have a few more images to share. Here is the wreck site of HMS Goliath sunk by torpedo on 13th May 1915 taking 570 men down with her. Located in Morto Bay.
