Pleased to share this piece about the necessity, challenges, and possibilities, of multi-sited portfolio level tenant organization based on years of research with terra graziani and Hannah Appel for the The Debt Collective 🟥 tenant power toolkit. Much more to come! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/an…

Held under the auspices of a Mellon Foundation Higher Learning grant & inspired by Robin D.G. Kelley, our Freedom School started with the premise and promise of the 3rd Reconstruction with Sa Whitley, Ph.D. focusing us on Black queer land movements that reclaim & make Black place.

Absolute dream to co-host this with Ananya Roy. It was a pleasure to show the group LA. Stay tuned for all our reflections in the coming months!

We are immensely grateful to La Union de Vecinos, Local Este de SILA Elizabeth Blaney Leonardo Vilchis for welcoming our Freedom School to Boyle Heights for a moving presentation of the work of tenant organizers in resisting displacement and claiming territory.

A key part of our learning from La Union de Vecinos, Local Este de SILA was to consider and strengthen transnational solidarity networks, with interlocutors Edgardo Contreras Nossa, Guadalupe Granero Realini, and Bryan Quintanilla of L.A. Tenants Union thinking across & beyond the Americas.

Who owns property? Who is your landlord? @ksuenamu Spirangelos terra graziani took up these deceptively simple questions on Day 3 of Freedom School, situating current structures of anonymous ownership and obscured liability in the long history of settler-colonialism.

What is the role of community archives in community defense? What better space to take up this question than the Skid Row History Museum & Archive of LA PovertyDepartment with archivist Henry Michael Apodaca and interlocutors Diane Wong & Luisa Melo

Our final panel at Freedom School convened by terra graziani with Annie Powers, beau-willie, Brenda Contreras, and Renato Abramowicz Santos was on landless people's movements and raised crucial questions about traditions & methodologies of revolution.

In the Black Radical Tradition, chaos and experimentation are required to challenge the state and build a reality worth defending. In the Cop City movement and beyond, Chaotic Protesters create meaningful resistance by disrupting the state's order. scalawagmagazine.org/2023/05/black-…

Many of the tenants most affected by smoke & ash from the fires aren't in LA City but in Pasadena and Altadena (which is unincorporated LA County). Here is a great living doc from Pasadena Tenants Union for tenants in Pasadena: docs.google.com/document/u/0/d…

I am glad to be part of the open-access volume "Insurgent ground: land, housing, property" curated by the wonderful Ananya Roy terra graziani & Annie Powers. The book emerges from a Freedom School held at the UCLA Institute on Inequality & Democracy in Summer 2024. Download: challengeinequality.luskin.ucla.edu/2025/05/05/ins…

Critics call Zohran Mamdani’s call for a rent freeze: “wild” “extreme” “unrealistic”and “pie in the sky.” I was on the board that votes on these rent freezes. They’re a lifeline to New Yorkers—there’s a larger agenda behind these criticisms. My latest in The Guardian.
