As the debate over the right to read wages, what impact will the alarming increase in book bans have on children’s literacy and furthermore, on children’s mental health? That is the focus of my opening talk this morning at the NYPL Center for Educators and Schools summit on censorship.

Censorship costs us in many ways. It undermines our ability to have meaningful dialogue and weakens our opportunity to build mutual understanding When critical thinking is deemed dangerous and the right to read is restricted, everyone loses The Aspen Institute thanks for sharing!

When it comes to defending freedom of speech and protecting the right to read librarians today are indisputably on the frontlines. Thank you to the American Bar Association for allowing me to reflect on why librarians should be celebrated as American heroes! americanbar.org/groups/crsj/pu…

After all these years, I am still struck by the idea of the public library, a space we all hold in common — none of us more entitled than the other — a true artifact of our public trust. (The exquisite Calgary Public Library. 10.24)

The same forces that have been banning books and attacking libraries and librarians will now be in charge of our entire education system. Take heed!

My view of sunrise over the ocean. Here in Recife to deliver the closing keynote at the Febab Federação 2024 Brazil Library and Information Science Congress. Grateful for the courage and resolve that librarians have shown in standing against censorship and disinformation!

In his 4th century BC treatise, “Politics,” Aristotle wrote these still salient words, “In bad government a good man is a bad citizen.” Adding, “He who is a citizen in a democracy will often not be a citizen in an oligarchy.” Heed these words in the coming days.

If you tell me that some people will make it and some people won’t, I will say that’s life. If you tell me that you are intentionally designing a system to ensure that you make it and others don’t, I will say that’s evil.
