Apparently Scythe is William Black, the first hero in Albion's history. Hopefully the new Fable will have something to say about open-ended lore connections like this from the original trilogy. I suspect Playground Games' reluctance to speak about the story hints at such.

Originally pitched for Dreamcast under the name “Project Ego”, Fable was created by Big Blue Box, a studio that was brought in under Lionhead before integrating entirely. It took four years and roughly 70 people to develop. “It’s gonna be the best game ever.” - Peter Molyneux
