Policy is often framed in zero sum terms. This is reductive and unambitious. But whatever, let’s use the lens for copyright & AI. Image we have a compulsory licensing rule, meaning anyone training a model needs to pay for all the data they use. Who wins and who loses?

🧵 The UK is planning to strengthen the copyright regime by exposing text-and-data mining to mandatory licensing. This could be lose-lose: moderately slower AI adoption would cost between £1300-2300 per year from reduced productivity growth. Creators would in turn get pennies.

⚛️ Hugely exciting news from the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce today! Today's interim report is extremely promising - the recommendations could be transformational for building both SMRs and gigascale nuclear!

As Britain enters its third (fourth?) heatwave of the year, here's a short thread on why air conditioning is *actively good* for fighting climate change, and why we should stop banning it from new homes. 🧵

There's some odd commentary in the UK about how we should follow the Mediterranean's lead on how to handle the heat without ACs: theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/a… I grew up in Southern Portugal, where temperatures often look like this in the summer. Not much about it is pleasant.
