Given the ubiquity of trigger warnings, I was surprised by research that they may do more harm than good wsj.com/articles/do-tr…

Excellent coverage of our content warnings meta-analysis by the Wall Street Journal! I was especially happy with the quote they chose to feature - if that's all someone takes away from this, then the research effort was worth it. wsj.com/articles/do-tr…

It was very surreal to come across this incidentally and see that it referenced my studies! For anyone interested, the meta-analysis on TWs he references is here: osf.io/cgzdn And the study on trauma survivors he references is here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/21…

Our new study — which finds that content warnings reduce the perceived beauty of art — has been accepted for publication at the journal Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts. See below for a thread w/link to the preprint!

Hey psych Twitter, does anyone have any recommendations or know of any papers about using attention checks (for online surveys) in adolescent populations (14-17 y\olds)? I am struggling to find anything! Academic Chatter™ #psychtwitter

Meta-Analysis: Trigger warnings don’t help people emotionally prepare for distressing material, or lead them to avoid it – the two things they’re intended to do. Their main effect seems to be to make people more anxious about encountering the material. doi.org/10.1177/216770…

Trigger warnings are not effective. 24 studies, 7k people: alerts about upsetting content don't prevent distress or promote learning. All they do is raise anxiety. The best way to shield mental health isn't to sound an alarm beforehand. It's to make support available afterward.

New preprint on trigger warnings! Previous studies have found that trigger warnings don't "work". So why have they spread everywhere? One theory, put forward by both advocates for trigger warnings and critics is that they *send important social signals*.

Why do professors often make a point of saying their classroom is a "safe space"? And why has the practice spread so rapidly? One reason might be that it sends a social signal that they (the professor) are caring and trustworthy.
