Reading Shi-Shi-Etko by Nicola I. Campbell this week led us to reflecting on the importance of the land Wilkinson Junior Public School & connecting with the plants. Today we walked, tied orange ribbons, & thought about Shi-Shi-Etko who couldn't go home after school like we do. Kim LaFave
Inspired by the connections Shi-Shi-Etko creates with the land, Wilkinson Junior Public School students create connections through plants in the Learning Garden by learning their medicinal uses, cultural significance & use as human or animal food. #oememories #plantconnections Nicola I. Campbell
Thankful to be able to help the wonderful @wilkinsonpsorg parent community Wilkinson Junior Public School who continue to support learning & growing in the #learninggarden by making a #foodforest supported by @TDFEF. We planted more food bearing plants to be enjoyed for years to come! Yum!
"Autumn speaks bliss to me, falling from the autumn tree" -Emily Bronte We have gotten to know many plants Wilkinson Junior Public School #learninggarden that are changing before our eyes! We created our own tribute to these teaching plants & honoured their beauty...🍂🌿🍁🍃 #outdoorlearning
We barely noticed the 🌧️ this afternoon with the abundant fall beauty Wilkinson Junior Public School! We found bright colours & were inspired to be nature artists who hope our display brightens your day! 🍂🍃🍁🌿 #outdoorlearning
I'm not the only one who enjoyed having my grade 9 son Wilkinson Junior Public School today for Take Our Kids To Work Day. ❤️ #TOKTW
Another great day of land learning Wilkinson Junior Public School! Grade 6s explored canoe garden plants while learning about the buried creek beneath, then special guest Green Thumbelina 🌱 shared Indigenous knowledges about sacred sage during morning recess to interested students! #landlearning
Team TicTacToe-a fun way to show what we know! Grade 5s Wilkinson Junior Public School have been explicitly taught spelling rules for protecting short vowels (-tch/-dge/-ck). Why not make listening for phonemes to make spelling choices fun? In this game, everyone wins! #spellingRULES #SoR #games
While Ss play in the #OPAL yard Wilkinson Junior Public School, they also design risk, collaborate, challenge themselves & make decisions. This experience is different each day & for each child, but for all it's meaningful, joy-filled, outdoor learning full of growth, pride & fun! Outdoor Play Canada
On #WinterSolstice Wilkinson Junior Public School, we honoured & acknowledged the pattern of nature by creating gifts of hope & light for the 'Solstice Tree' in the #LearningGarden. We were inspired by the celebration of hope & togetherness in kelseyegross --find me on other platforms book. ❤️☀️❄️🌙 #outdoorlearning
"Make the most of what you have, when you have it, where you are." -Eleanor Roosevelt A speck of snow came & went quickly, but Wilkinson Junior Public School still made gourmet sno-ffins, dirt & snow cake, a speckled snow person, tossed a snowball & all with an icy smile! ❄️ #outdoorlearning
We dance the floss Wilkinson Junior Public School when practicing the "floss" (flsz) spelling rule! We look at the image ending with f,l,s, or z & if it: 1. follows a short vowel & 2. claps out 1 syllable - we double it... then do our happy dance - floss style! #SoR #spellingRULES #tier1
Cold week in the #OPAL yard Wilkinson Junior Public School meant a cool adventure challenge: cross the yard using few #looseparts. Some were fleeing an island of shark infested waters & built shelters! ALL groups collaborated, communicated, problem solved & had team-building fun! Outdoor Play Canada
Explicit #tier1 instruction in #fdk Wilkinson Junior Public School is fun! Phonemic awareness is key for reading & writing skills, so we work to recognize & differentiate between short vowel sounds. We practice mouth shape & connect sounds to anchor #asl words. Can you hear the difference? #SoR
Creativity is messy... & Wilkinson Junior Public School kinders are VERY creative! 1 wet week = a big puddle & soggy exploration. It started with curiosity: can we make 2 puddles? It resulted in collaborative bridge construction & 2 puddles for all to enjoy! 💦❤️ Outdoor Play Canada #outdoorlearning
During #outdooreducation Wilkinson Junior Public School, we enjoy free loose-part #riskyplay which Canadian Paediatric Society says benefits Ss physical, mental & social health! It's true, they are building executive function skills for school & life while having fun. ❤️ Let's keep playing! Outdoor Play Canada
"Play is our brain's favourite way of learning" - Diane Ackerman Wilkinson Junior Public School made the most of Global School Play out in the winter sunshine! Unstructured, screen-free, joy-filled learning led to jumping, building, creating, climbing fun for all! #outdoorlearning #GSPD2024
We enjoy #literacy skill practice while dancing with Hedbanz Wilkinson Junior Public School! Music got us moving! When it stopped, it was reading (& recording) made fun! Grade 5s noted hard/soft C #spellingrules. Grade 2/3s practiced reading & spelling words with r-controlled vowels. #SoR #tier1
It's the sweetest season! Wilkinson Junior Public School enjoyed an inaugural maple tapping as we continue to connect to the land & learn about nature's gifts. Few drips so far but lots of learning from stories & the experience! #maplesyrup #BraidingSweetgrass #outdoorlearning
