Hi all! I’m Morgan and I’m the dean of school culture at an elementary school in St. Louis. Looking forward to my first #ECEChat in a while!

A1. Love this question. Kids are born intrinsically compassionate. Being intentional with SEL activities helps promote empathy ❤️ #ECEchat

A1: lots of modeling, conversations, and opportunities to practice being empathetic to others through lessons and activities! Everything can be a teachable moment.

A2: I love this Q! I will literally ask “how can you solve that problem?” when Ss come to me with small things. If they’re not able to verbalize a solution, one of their classmates is usually right there to help out. Builds their skill to solve problems and builds relationships!

A3 I have a counselor’s corner in our parent newsletter where I highlight the trait we are working on and how to foster that learning at home! #ECEChat

A3 Teachers can create customized video playlists for families using @ReadyRosie Some of the videos target #SEL skills. It’s a great tool for engaging, equipping, & empowering families. #ecechat

A4: working to meet Ss where they’re at and recognizing that success looks different for all students, but all students have something valuable to contribute to our school community. And acting in accordance with that belief! #ECEchat

A5: making an effort to “close the loop” as much as humanly possible. Whether a Ss has a consequence or just needs time to calm down, we need to have a later convo about what happened, what was the cause, and what we can do next time. #ECEchat

A6: all throughout their lives, kids will encounter people who are different than they are. I would much rather have open, honest conversations about people’s differences in the safe space of our room and establish an expectation of acceptance.

Buenos dias, mi gente. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, here are ways to appreciate us: - Coffee - Naps - Books - Belief in the academic and socioemotional wellbeing of our children Not necessarily in that order. This is our moment. Much love to my fellow educators.
