First day of PPDP 2018 in Frankfurt: Remembering Martin Hofmann. He was a great researcher; it’s sad that he is not among us anymore...

The time has finally come: I am starting to look for a job after finishing my PhD this summer! I'm interested in verification, (industrial) research, and functional programming. Preferably in the area Frankfurt/Germany, or remote work. Does anyone have first pointers for me?

Officially handed in my dissertation - it is now under review! 🙌

This week, I‘m visiting Active Group in Tübingen, getting to know Mike Sperber and co. It‘s very interesting for me to see a company from the inside after so many years spent in university! Btw: Defense scheduled for July 12, which is getting disturbingly close 😬

Things I’m taking home from my wonderful trip to Active Group GmbH last week: 1. Functional programming is great! 2. Active Group is a very interesting employer for someone from programming language research. 3. Tübingen is a beautiful city. ...

... 4. Super helpful feedback for my defense talk in two weeks 😬 5. Four pairs of „barefoot shoes“! 😆 (This seems to be a thing in Tübingen - some five different shops or so, while I had been looking for just a single one in Darmstadt for ages.)

I probably should have modeled the problem of efficiently getting two bikes and the car to service & repair and back these two days in FOL and asked a constraint solver to come up with an efficient plan for me...

... and she successfully defended and got her beautiful and obviously green hat. 🎉🙌👨‍🎓

So, yes, I did successfully defend my PhD thesis today! I am very happy that everything worked out well in the end. Thanks to everyone in and outside of STG Darmstadt who was part of this long journey! 🎓

Just started my journey to Berlin, with a night train, to go to Bob Konferenz ! Never took such a train before, let’s see how that goes...

Arrived at #SummerBOB2019 ! First talk on my program: Kathleen Fisher on Formal Methods to Eliminate Exploitable Bugs.

And now I am already on my way back home by train. #SummerBOB2019 was very nice, I got lots of useful pointers to interesting topics and companies. BTW, night train last night was really quite ok - not super comfortable of course, but reliable and mostly quiet.

Hi there from the “other side”: After considering many different options for quite a while, I now started working in industry, as consultant.

Funny, in my first two weeks as a consultant, I simply had to continue right where I left off in July when defending my thesis: creating lots of slides and presenting them to people 😀.

Kind of ironic: A couple of months ago, I decided against following up on job opportunities that would have meant mostly working from home - and now, Corona has me in permanent Home Office mode 🤷🏻‍♀️.

.... no complaints of course, it’s really great to have a job where it is actually possible to do stuff from home (at least in theory, in practice though I still have to figure out how to productively participate in a call while at the same time occupying a small child 😂).
