Incredible field trip to Greece kickstarting my PhD studying slip-rates on faults. (Left) 2021 wildfires exposing the Skinos fault. (Right) Rupture of the 1981 earthquake.

An exceptional fieldtrip to the rapidly extending tectonic setting of central Greece. Begin detailed rupture mapping of the 1981 earthquakes for my first paper on throw variation ✅ Locate fault scarp sample sites ✅ Mapping paleoshorelines and finding corals for dating ✅

The challenge of finding an earthquake rupture (commonly identified in the form of cm-scale soil steps). Yellow waypoints = rupture locations Red line = trekking up and down thorny overgrown slopes

2nd year Birkbeck undergraduate field trip to the Perachora Peninsula, Greece. Lovely bunch of hard working students. A year since starting my earthquake geology PhD and already teaching my research in Holocene active faults and historical ruptures - could be worse. Birkbeck, University of London

And that concludes the @UCLIRDR Spring Academy 2023! Special thanks to Ilan Kelman for organising yet another successful gathering of #staff and #students, and to all for attending, and sharing ideas, tactics, and strategies for the #IRDR going forward!

Day 2 and 3: Finding the Atalanti and Kamena Vourla Fault whilst getting inventive with field work including: ⁃extra waterproof socks ⁃using a fault as a slide (not recommended) ⁃hand signals for distance measurements

Day 4 mapping: Identified the Thermopylae Fault, Greece, (notice the proximity to a railway line in the top left). Visited the location of the 480 BC battlefield (which the film 300 was based on) including the statue of Leonidas and hot springs which may be sourced at the fault.

10-day whirlwind fieldtrip of Central Greece completed ✅ Discovered some new faults sites that I can’t wait to publish 🏔️ The fiat panda served us well (just about). The London NERC DTP Birkbeck, University of London @UCLIRDR

Attica region Holocene active fault mapping ✅ Highlights😄: -Finding some elusive faults, e.g. the Afidnai fault. -Runs in the mountains. Lowlights😳: -Police pulling us over with guns for showing “suspicious activity” in Athens (fault hunting). -Bad fall on the Skinos Fault.

Great pleasure to discuss my research on earthquakes and surface displacement hazard at the IRDR annual conference. I learnt so much from an inspiring day of talks with the theme of risk without borders #IRDR13

Enjoyed doing my first conference presentation at #INQUARoma2023 showing my findings on the 1981 earthquake ruptures. Also, great getting to know so many earthquake researchers and see the exciting work that’s coming out of this community. Birkbeck, University of London @UCLIRDR

Last week staff & #PhD #students gathered for the 2024 Spring Academy at the beautiful Hartsfield Manor in Surrey. Our annual two-day residential trip takes us into the countryside to spend time together to contemplate, connect, inspire & engage in meaningful discussion.

Last week at the European Seismological Commission in Corfu, I presented my work on slip relationships between two faults using 36Cl dating & rupture observations. Great to discuss new advances in earthquake research. #ESC2024 The London NERC DTP Birkbeck, University of London UCL Risk and Disaster Reduction
