Graham Hill was born this day in 1929. In a glittering career he won 2 #F1 #WorldChampionships, the #indy500 and the #LeMans 24 hours. In doing so he became the unofficial holder of motor racing’s ‘TripleCrown’, a title which no other driver has, or is ever likely to achieve.

Austrian racing driver Niki Lauda (d.2019) was born OTD in 1949. So confident was he in his driving ability that he took out a £30k bank loan to fund his career. In #F1 he drove for #March, #Ferrari, #Brabham and #McLaren and won three #WorldChampionships (1975, 1977 & 1984).

Mario Andretti was born in Italy OTD in 1940. He won 12 #F1 #GP’s and the 1978 #WDC driving for #Lotus. He raced in #Indycar 407 times, won 4 titles, the 1969 #Indy500 (see below) and his last race at the age of 53, taking pole at 234 mph! He also won in NASCAR and Sportscars.

Born OTD in 1927, Phil Hill was one of only two Americans to have won the #F1 #WorldChampionship, which he did in 1961 driving for #ScuderiaFerrari. A quiet and sophisticated man, he had tremendous success in #Ferrari sports cars, winning at Le Mans 3 times - 1958, 1960 and 1962.

OTD in 1970 the 6th round on the #WorldSportscarChampionship was a #1000kms race held on the old 8.7 mile #Spa circuit. The race started in wet conditions is is remembered for #JoSiffert and #PedroRodriguez leadimg the pack, door-banging through Eau Rouge in their #Porsche917’s.
