Our comment on the proposal to create a new offence of engaging in grossly offensive conduct in public in response to the Pusey case. The offence is unnecessary, highly ambiguous, prone to politicised decisions and may amplify offensive conduct. libertyvictoria.org.au/sites/default/… #springst

I just had a 3 hr conversation with someone who identifies as a Christian right wing conservative. We had dinner together. Talked & listened. Agreed & disagreed. It was stimulating. There was no hate. This may be the most subversive thing I have ever done. #RadicalPolitics

21 yrs from the start of the "war on terror" and we can finally have a rational conversation about how we deal with it. I wonder how long till we see rational law on the subject as well. Not another 21 yrs I hope. theguardian.com/australia-news…

Privacy 🧵- Our joint statement with Law Institute of Victoria and Digital Rights Watch on the Health Legislation Amendment (Information Sharing) Bill 2023 was referred to several times in Vic Parliament yesterday - debate back on today. People should have the option to ‘opt out’ of the scheme #springst 1/7

What a disgrace. The whole "terrorism" security apparatus is nothing more than a power grab. It cannot be made more clear than this. theguardian.com/australia-news…

What a disgrace. Deeply disappointed to see the Australian Greens buy into Labour's commitment to a police state. It's not just the justice system, this legislation undermines the rule of law. Katherine Copsey should have stood up for the separation of powers. Really.

Our joint submission with NSW Council for Civil Liberties on the deeply flawed Continuing Detention Order (CDO) regime has been referenced by the The Saturday Paper. CDOs should be abolished. They're based on an unvalidated risk assessment tool, and post-sentence detention is repugnant to the rule of law.

So great to be treated like a criminal just for shopping at your local Woolworths. Nothing like hardcore corporate surveillance to make Saturday morning grocery shopping fun. Can't wait for the deployment of private militia and random stop-and-search!

It cheapens the concept of antisemitism--a real global curse--for defenders of the Israeli government to pretend that it is somehow antisemitic to hold Israel to the same standards of international humanitarian law as we use to assess Hamas's conduct. A war crime is a war crime.
