There’s been a surge in violence targeting synagogues this year. Today’s attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, MI is the 3rd major synagogue attack in the US in less than 3 months — and the 6th in North America following a spate of synagogue attacks in Toronto last week.

We should all be safe wherever we pray, learn and come together in community. Our kids have never been to a Jewish school, camp or event without passing by guards and gates. This is what passes for normal but it shouldn’t have to be.

Two days after the horrific shooting at Tree of Life, I was with leaders of Black and Latino churches in Pittsburgh. The clergy gathered around the Jews and offered a blessing. It was the first moment I could breathe. None of us is safe unless we all are.
