Well done to ✨Lentil Pentil✨ @HistoricAlly Billy Kay Iona Fyfe @scotlit Hist Scots Thesaurus Dictionaries of the Scots Language & others for their arles in the leid of Burns,Dunbar, Ramsay & Scott to a new generation. Some of the most globally significant writers of the last 250 years wrote in it
Delighted & honoured to have been asked to contribute to this update on Scottish lexicographers, viz. a much expanded article on John Jamieson & new entries on William Grant of the SND & Alexr Warrack. Excellent articles also by Peter Gilliver @petermgilliver.bsky.social, Marina Dossena & Massimo Sturiale.
William Grant (1863–1946), who features in @odnb Dec update, was the 1st editor of the Scottish National Dictionary. Work on SND continued after his death & is now part of the online Dict of the Scots Language. @scotsdictionars Scots Language Centre @scotgovscots oxforddnb.com/newsitem/789/w…
Jamieson's Dictionary Marina Dossena Particularly glad of the opportunity to bring James McLeod Wyllie's remarkable (and tragic) story to a wider audience. For those prevented by a paywall from reading the @ODNB article, see tinyurl.com/mrxr6pwf (sorry, current version of this page n/a)
Dictionaries of the Scots Language For the sake of accuracy, it is important to note that the @odnb has included an entry on John Jamieson since its first edition in 1891. The new article was commissioned to replace previous versions to take account of recent scholarship on Jamieson’s work and influence.
