Every round of submissions, I end up purchasing books by poets whose work we don't take. I love the poems so much that I must have their books. And hope they send more work our way. This is just to say: even a no can include a kind of yes. Keep sending your poems into the world.

To be this world’s child is to be a hairline crack, a slot canyon orphaned both of matter and light: not the immensity of what’s held apart. — Sandra Meek “Zion” PS 88.3, Fall 2014

Abortion is now illegal in Missouri. No exceptions for rape or incest. Right before I was elected, I met a pregnant 11 year old who has been raped by her uncle. What about HER rights?

I firmly believe language fails us as much as it saves us, especially in this maddening moment. I wrote this poem as an epistle to write back to my body which has always felt under threat. The research & stats devastated me & reminded me about this history of resistance.

I had the honor of talking with Jamaica Kincaid recently about her famous prose poem/short-short “Girl”: “I had been reading Elizabeth Bishop’s ‘In the Waiting Room,’” she said, “and it was as if she [Bishop] opened the door and said ‘come in.’ Then I wrote ‘Girl.’”

I've read a lot of statements of purpose for MFA programs and I've collected some tips. Thought I'd make it into a thread while I was at it. Here we go... 🧵 (feel free to RT!)
